A Kindred Surprise

Kindred Surprise is a critical concept of a tool for participatory research of privacy, data security and competence of action in the Internet of Things (IoT). It was conceived as a word play at first, because most of-the-shelf surveillance technology for the Arduino platform fits into the capsule of a »Kinderüberraschung« aka Kinder Surprise. It is a thought experiment by Albrecht Kurze, with a little help from the wonderful interdisciplinary team of Miteinander project.

The concept allows to understand chances and implications of the usage of IoT products in the Smart Home together with users. It embodies the easy integration of simple connected sensors in smart everyday objects. This way users can participatory research, if sensors for temperature, humidty, light, and so on, can become dangerous for our privacy like cameras and microphones. Through the simple sensors and the harmless, almost amorphous form the possibility of surveillance can become a true surprise for the users. If the users recognize what kind of data is collected and what it tells about their everyday activities, the Internet of Things may become the Internet of Traitors. This concept eventually led to »Guess the Data« and the involvement with the ThingsCon family.
